Small Town, Small Time

Living in a small town has its good but can be severely lacking for a writer. We don't have writing conferences, readings, writing groups. I wish we had open mic nights at least but it doesn't happen. The closest events are three hours or more by car; there is no way I can get there.

Do I need book fairs and the like? Well, no. But it would be nice. It would be pleasant to have some like-minded individuals to discuss progress with. In a way, writing is kind of like believing in the paranormal, it is nice having someone understand.

Maybe someday I will attend conferences, seminars, readings. But for now I must read about them other places. It could be they are overrated but I want to know, anyway. Online can only take me so far.

Anyone else with the same problem?
